Course Overview
The Dental Nursing- NVQ (No.3231) is a qualification, designed to improve your career opportunities for professional development. It is all about you performing in the workplace and being assessed doing the job that you are required to meet National Occupational Standards.

AS a DCP dental care professional is supporting other oral health members across the full range of dental treatment. Dental nurses must work to standards set by the General Dental Council. From July 2008 all Dental Nurses (DN) in the UK must be registered with the General Dental Council (GDC). The course awarding body City & Guilds has a legal responsibility under Dentist Act 1984 to check the quality of all Professional Complementary to Dentistry (PCD) accredited education training providers which lead to registration with GDC.

Dental nursing is very promising and prestigious 24 mouths course, comprising both theory and work placement. City & Guilds requires students to be in a placement (chair side experience in a dental surgery) for 24 months before they are given the qualification certificate.

Career Prospects
Dental nursing plays a vital role in the health and dental profession today. Dental nurses provide close support and assistance to the dental surgeon in all aspects of patient care. As a dental nurse, one may work in a private practice, dental hospital or services community.

There are many opportunities for education and training, management practice and administration with the City and Guilds qualification. Qualified dental nurses may also obtain further qualifications in oral health education, dental sedation nursing, and dental radiography and they may also train to be a dental hygienist & therapist.

Qualified dental nurses will be included on the National Register, which allows them to follow post-qualification courses including Diploma in Dental Hygiene, Diploma in Dental Therapy, Diploma in Dental Technology and many more.

  • Once you are on the placement then you will be attending the practical course in the rest days of the week in dental surgeries. For each of the international student, course-related work placement that applicant will be spending on must not exceed half of the total length of the course spent.

Please note:
For overseas students, the college arranges many placements, but students are encouraged to make their own efforts to find one from an early stage of their learning. Placements may be paid or unpaid, but they are a required part of your study programs.

For Home and EU students are expected to be in practice before application.

Entry Requirements

UK Student
GCSEs Grades A-C equivalent or 12 Years of Schooling - Preferably with Science Background.

Overseas Applicant

  • A Level equivalent qualification
  • IELTS 5.0 or equivalent.

Exam Assessment Methods

The Award in Dental Nursing is assessed by a 90 minute examination. The examination is available on three occasions in each year (March, June and December). The actual dates and times are found in the City & Guilds catalogue.

The results are released by City & Guilds to each centre that has entered candidates. City & Guilds aims to complete this within 45 days of the date of the examination. It is the responsibility of the centre to advise candidates of the results.

Remarks

Although students may pass the examinations, they will not be awarded the certificate until they have completed 24 months at the chair side. Therefore, it is essential that the students regularly attend placements and chair side internships either arranged by the College or in most cases by the student themselves.
